Updates from West Baltimore

Since Freddie Gray’s tragic death the coalition has been organizing in response.  In the past week the coalition

– Has listened to over 200 Sandtown residents through community meetings and door knocking to hear from RESIDENTS what they need.

– Hosted a community clean up with over 500 volunteers to clean up debris and fix a damaged community farm after Monday night’s violence.

– Hosted a dinner for residents to come together to discuss what residents need in this time of crisis.

– Coordinated and Organized food distribution to over 1,000 families.

– Demanded and secured a meeting between Sandtown residents and City Council President Jack Young so our city leadership can hear directly from residents most affected by this crisis what residents need with the support of BUILD.

– Demanded and secured a meeting between Commissioner Batts and residents so the Police Department leadership can hear directly from residents about their concerns with the police with the support of BUILD.

– Drafted legislation to reform Baltimore’s Civilian Review Board, so that is may have more power and officers may be held accountable for misconduct.

Here is what we are continuing to do:

– Continue to distribute food to residents who are cut off from food because many food stores in West Baltimore remain closed.

– Hold a public hearing on police misconduct in West Baltimore at Sharon Baptist Church in Sandtown on May 16 at 12p. We are currently collecting stories from residents who wish to speak about experiencing or witnessing police brutality in West Baltimore.  Please call 410-787-2726.

– Holding our annual Boundary Block Party on Saturday May 9 from 1-4pm at Pennsylvania Ave and Presstman Streets.

– Holding a Town Hall meeting with City Council President Jack Young in Sandtown so our city leadership can hear directly from Sandtown residents.
